Development & Support Staff

One of VAMT’s key activities is to offer support, advice and assistance to local voluntary, community and charitable organisations. In consultation with its membership - and thanks to funding from the Objective One European Regional Development Fund and the Welsh Assembly Government’s Communities First Programme - it is able to provide:

    • Information on starting a new group – constitutions, committees, and how to get started
    • Help to existing groups to develop new activities and services
    • Advice and guidance on policies, procedures and best practice in running a not-for-profit organisation
    • Assistance in deciding whether or not you need to register as a charity
    • Information on new funding opportunities and how best to make an application
    • Specialist support and advice in marketing and ICT

Hilary Edwards is responsible for managing these development and support services, as well as providing a generic development service and co-ordinating training targeted at the sector.

Hilary Edwards

Development and Training Co-ordinator

Hilary has a number of year's experience in the voluntary sector. As well as managing the Capacity Building Team, she is responsible for developing and co-ordinating a series of organisational development events, and providing support and development assistance to both new and existing groups. Elaine James

Development Support Officer / SIVP

Elaine provides support to the development team as well as the admin team and works closely with the partnership officers. Elaine is responsible for maintaining the website and database as well as ensuring relevant information is available to our members. Matt Deards

ICT Officer


VAMT's ICT and Internet services are now delivered by Matthew Deards. Matt can assist our members with IT matter from websites to networks and general IT enquiries. Matt’s experience spans many years in the IT industry working for ICI, Shell UK, BBC and Taylor Woodrow. In that time he has worked all areas of the Industry and has well rounded understanding of most things ICT. Matt can be contacted on 01685 353900 or email matt.deards@vamt.net

Laura Harvey

Marketing Officer

Laura can assist you and your organization on all marketing related issues. Typical support could be in the form of assisting you write a marketing plan, designing a logo that can be built into a ‘brand’, increasing your PR and communicating information on your organization through the media. Laura can offer support and advice on shorter projects aswell as working with groups on long-term projects such as implementing a marketing strategy. Joanna Markham

Funding Officer

Joanna is able to provide groups with advice and support on all aspects of funding from identifying potential funding sources to providing guidance with filling out application forms for funding and developing longer-term funding strategies. Greg Paulsen

Communities First Capactity Building Officer

Greg is based in Merthyr Tydfil office and covers the Communities First areas in the north of the Borough, ie, Dowlais, Gurnos, Penydarren, Cyfarthfa, Trefechan. Greg’s role is to provide support and assistance to Communities First Partnership Boards and voluntary and community groups within these areas. Alyson King

Community Development Co-ordinator

Alyson will ensure that poverty and social disadvantage is tackled effectively by taking responsibility for the process of developing, co-ordinating and implementing a community action plan and capacity building plan. The plans will provide the framework for short, mid and long term action that will form the foundations of regeneration in Trefechan.. Karyn Morris
